The backfiring is not a problem, the heating might be. After installing drag pipes on our sportster, we found that the carb mixture was too lean and that the new pipes were turning blue. A jet kit provided the richness needed to lower the temperature of the pipes and stabilize the color. The bike still pops and crackles a little, but it no longer explodes and shoots flames. The same thing happened when we put a SuperTrapp on the Savage. Until I removed the white spacer in the carb, the bike REALLY backfired and the pipes started turning blue!
